Computing
Computing Curriculum Intent Statement
At Churchfield Church School, we are computer technologists. Our intent is to deliver a broad, ambitious, and progressive computing curriculum that equips children with the skills, knowledge, and understanding to thrive in a digital world. We want pupils to become confident, responsible, and creative users of technology, prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
Our curriculum is designed to:
-
Align with the National Curriculum by teaching computer science, information technology, and digital literacy.
-
Develop computational thinking, enabling children to solve problems logically and creatively.
-
Build progression of skills from EYFS through KS1 and KS2, ensuring children revisit and deepen prior learning.
-
Promote safe and responsible use of technology, including online safety and digital citizenship.
-
Encourage creativity and innovation, giving pupils opportunities to design, create, and evaluate digital content.
-
Foster resilience and independence, preparing children to adapt to new technologies and digital challenges.
Skills by Key Stage
End of Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2)
By the end of KS1, children should be able to:
-
Understand what algorithms are and how they are implemented as programs on digital devices.
-
Create and debug simple programs.
-
Use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs.
-
Use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate, and retrieve digital content.
-
Recognise common uses of information technology beyond school.
-
Use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private, and know where to go for help if they have concerns.
End of Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3–4)
By the end of Lower KS2, children should be able to:
-
Design, write, and debug programs that accomplish specific goals.
-
Use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs.
-
Work with variables and various forms of input and output.
-
Use logical reasoning to explain how simple algorithms work and detect and correct errors.
-
Use search technologies effectively and evaluate digital content.
-
Select, use, and combine a variety of software to accomplish given goals.
-
Understand the importance of online safety, including recognising risks and knowing how to report concerns.
End of Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5–6)
By the end of Upper KS2, children should be able to:
-
Understand computer networks, including the internet, and how they provide multiple services such as the World Wide Web.
-
Design and create programs with increasing complexity, using abstraction and decomposition.
-
Use logical reasoning to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs.
-
Use technology to collect, analyse, evaluate, and present data and information.
-
Use a range of digital tools creatively to design and present content for different audiences.
-
Demonstrate a secure understanding of online safety, digital citizenship, and the ethical use of technology.
-
